After his owner’s death, this Italian dog named Fido kept waiting for him every day at the bus stop for 14 years until his own death in 1958. In 1957 the town unveiled a statue for him.

    1. i didn’t realize there was an italian hachiko!

i was on a ferry once, overnight, and for people who hadn’t booked a cabin, there was a communal seating area where they had a movie playing and you were allowed to fall asleep there if you could. the friend i was with and i couldn’t sleep so we were watching the movie, and it just happened to be ‘hachi: a dog’s tale’ which is a heartbreaking movie. at the end i said out loud ‘that was horrible!’ the only other people there were this asain family and when i said that, the father (i’m guessing) turned to glare at me. the next words out of my mouth, though, were ‘that poor dog!’ and he seemed to kind of be like ‘ooh, okay’ and turned back around.

i’m guessing he was japanese and this dog is a national treasure and he didn’t want someone badmouthing hachi.

A year before the pooch passed? In any case, credit the Italians for their fine sculptors. Beats most of the civic installments in the US for the past 20 years.
